With Trump’s tariffs looming, Jolie looks back on her meetings with US politicians – at the national level

Foreign Minister Mélanie Jolie will provide an update on Canada’s efforts to halt the imposition of U.S. tariffs on Friday morning after meetings in Washington on border security, trade and investment on Thursday.

Jolie spent the day meeting with both Republicans and Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen, and Idaho Senator James Risch.

The meetings come days before new President Donald Trump takes office and pledges to impose 25% tariffs on all products coming into the United States from Canada and Mexico.

Energy and Natural Resources Secretary Jonathan Wilkinson was also in Washington this week, and said Thursday that Trump’s tariff plan was unclear, even among Republican senators and congressmen.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with premiers in Ottawa on Wednesday to discuss the country’s response to Trump’s tariff threat.

Jolie also met Thursday evening with outgoing Secretary of State Antony Blinken, with whom she has worked closely in recent years on global issues including the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
