As Americans headed to the polls on Election Day, a man was arrested after a security check in Washington, DC
US Capitol Police said on Tuesday that the man was stopped during a screening operation at the Capitol Visitor Center.
“The man smelled like fuel, and he was carrying a torch and a flare gun,” she said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“The CVC is closed for tours throughout the day while we investigate. We will provide more information when we are able.”

Police said the suspect’s vehicle was located at 9th Street and Maryland Avenue in Nebraska, and had been cleared by law enforcement officials.

Voting on Tuesday went largely smoothly across the country, with scattered reports of delays due to severe weather, errors in printing ballots and technical problems.

Most of the hiccups that occurred by midday were “largely expected and planned routine events,” Kite Conley, senior adviser to the director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, said at a news conference.
She said the agency is not currently tracking any significant national incidents impacting election security.
