A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the northern California coast on Thursday, prompting a tsunami warning for a large swath of the California and Oregon coasts, officials said.
The US Geological Survey said that the earthquake, which occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, was centered about 63 kilometers west of the town of Ferndale, a sparsely populated area on the northern coast of California.

The National Tsunami Center issued a warning for a long distance from the west coast of the United States, from the city of Dunes, Oregon, south to San Francisco and San Jose, California, a distance of 400 miles (643 km).
