These areas, along with parts of El Salvador and western Nicaragua, could see up to 5 inches (13 cm), with local totals reaching 15 inches (38 cm). According to the Hurricane Center, conditions “will lead to flash flooding in areas, possibly significant, along with the potential for mudslides.”

“Storm surge may raise water levels by up to 1 to 3 feet above ground level near and north of where Central Sara crosses the coast of Belize,” the center said on Sunday. “Near the coast, the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves,” he added.

Meanwhile, northern Honduras is not yet clear. The center expects up to 3 inches (8 cm) of rain to fall there, but some areas could see totals of up to 40 inches (1 meter), with “catastrophic and life-threatening flooding” continuing to occur.
