Nicaragua, the Central American country, announced on Friday that it would sever diplomatic relations with Israel, calling the Israeli government “fascist” and “genocidal.”
The Nicaraguan government said in a statement that the severing of relations was due to Israeli attacks on Palestinian territories.

The Nicaraguan government said the conflict now “also extends against Lebanon and seriously threatens Syria, Yemen and Iran.”

The Middle East is on high alert for further regional escalation after Iran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel on October 1. Iran supports the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah, which has been targeted by Israel in a series of recent deadly attacks.

Iran is also an ally of the administration of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega. Nicaragua has become increasingly isolated in recent years after Ortega cracked down on anti-government protests in 2018, which rights groups say left about 300 people dead.
