MIAMI (AP) — Hurricane Oscar made landfall early Sunday in the southeastern Bahamas and was headed toward Cuba, an island recently besieged by widespread power outages.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the center of the storm had reached Great Inagua Island. It is expected to produce a dangerous storm surge that could translate into significant coastal flooding there and in other areas in the southeastern Bahamas. Rainfall of 2 to 4 inches is expected, with up to 6 inches arriving in isolated areas.
Forecasters said 5 to 10 inches of rain was expected across eastern Cuba through Tuesday, with up to 15 inches arriving in some isolated locations.

Hurricane Oscar formed on Saturday off the coast of the Bahamas and bypassed the Turks and Caicos Islands in the south.
The National Hurricane Center previously described the storm as “minor,” but hurricane warnings were issued Sunday for the southeastern Bahamas and parts of Cuba.

Maximum gusty wind speeds were recorded at 80 mph (130 km/h) with higher gusts. Its center is located about 150 miles (240 kilometers) east-northeast of Guantanamo, Cuba. The storm was moving west at 12 mph (19 kph) and was expected to reach Guantanamo or Holguin, Cuba, Sunday afternoon with hurricane force.
