After Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president, he outlined some key priorities that he planned to enact through executive orders, from deportations and border controls to renaming the Gulf of Mexico.

Trump’s use of executive orders is not new, as these orders are a tool that incoming presidents often use when they first take office.

Signed statements typically specify how the president wants the federal government to be run, through instructions to agencies, requests for reports, and in some cases major policy reforms.

Here are some of the key executive orders Trump will sign on his first day.

Ahead of his inauguration, Trump said he would rename the Gulf of Mexico as America’s Gulf, something he made clear he intends to do with an order issued on Monday.

Whether he would be able to make the change unilaterally is up for debate, according to the Associated Press, and other countries do not have to agree to the U.S. decision.

The International Hydrographic Organization works to ensure that all of the world’s seas, oceans and navigable waters are surveyed and mapped uniformly, although there are cases where countries refer to the same body of water by different names.

Trump added that Mount Denali, which was renamed by former President Barack Obama, will return to its original name, Mount McKinley, after the 25th president.

Immigration and deportation

The president said he would sign an executive order declaring a national emergency at the US border with Mexico.

Immigration status, forcing people seeking asylum to wait in Mexico.

He also said he would designate drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, while using the Foreign Enemies Act to leverage federal and state law enforcement to “eliminate the presence of all foreign cartels and criminal networks that bring devastating crimes to American soil.”

This law allows the president to deport any noncitizen from a country with which the United States is at war.

Various orders on the economy and energy will also be implemented, including what the White House called “ending (Joe) Biden’s climate extremist policies.”

Outlining its planned plan, the White House said it intends to sign orders aimed at lowering energy prices and taming inflation, including easing regulatory burdens on oil and natural gas production and declaring a national energy emergency to use all resources needed to build critical infrastructure. “America’s First Priorities.”

He said in his statements: “The inflation crisis is caused by massive overspending and escalating energy prices.” “We’ll dig, baby, we’ll dig.”

Ending the Green New Deal is also a priority he noted in his speech, which would include repealing what he called the electric vehicle mandate put in place under former President Joe Biden.

Despite reports that he has backed away from his threat of tariffs against Canada and Mexico, Trump has said he plans to impose tariffs and taxes on foreign countries to “enrich our citizens,” which would include creating the Foreign Revenue Service to collect tariffs, duties, and revenues.

Tariffs are imposed by the government on goods entering the country, and are paid by the importer, not the exporter. Some companies may pass on the additional cost of the tariff to customers.
