The weight of President-elect Trump’s threat to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian exports to the United States looms large, especially in Alberta.
Alberta is Canada’s largest exporter to the United States, and would be hit the hardest if the tariffs are implemented, says Trevor Lewington, CEO of the Lethbridge Economic Development Corporation.

“That’s a big concern,” Lewington said. “A 25 per cent tariff would make any Canadian good moving into the United States 25 per cent more expensive than its competitive product made in the United States.”
Lewington hopes that negotiations between the provincial and federal governments with the United States will lead to the removal or reduction of tariffs, otherwise Canada will face a recession, the loss of thousands of jobs and rising commodity prices.
