Pennsylvania officials said that a man entered the intensive care unit in the hospital and took staff as hostages before the police killed him on Saturday. An officer also died in the shooting.

Tim Parker, York County’s lawyer, said the man entered the UPMC memorial hospital with a bag carrying a pistol and tie. He went directly to the intensive care unit department, shot, and hit three employees, including a doctor, nurse and guard.

The officer, who died in the shooting, was identified as Andrew Duarti from the West York Boro Police Department. He was responding to a mutual assistance call, the department was published on its Facebook page.

“We all broke our hearts and saddened in his loss,” Sean Mouk, a West York manager, told Associated Press.

UPMC Memorial officials said that the gunman was also killed, but no patients were injured.
