A filmmaker who has traveled to 80 countries chose a place on Earth to call home — and despite a number of strange choices, he chose Winnipeg.
In the now-Viral video Viewed over 153,000 times on YouTube, Carl Watson shares his reasons for moving from London, England to the Manitoba capital, even though he has spent time in hot spots around the world.
One main reason is that his wife — a fellow traveler he met while touring Iceland — was born and raised in Winnipeg, but Watson says he fell in love with the city the first time he visited.
“I’ve lived in London for the last 17 years, and I have great friends there and family there, but you don’t feel the community like you do in Winnipeg,” Watson told 680 CJOB. the beginning.
“Canadians are known for being polite and friendly, but in Winnipeg and Manitoba it takes it to a whole other level. Everyone I met here made me feel at home before I knew it would be home.”
The video, which Watson didn’t expect to get so much attention, got a lot of responses — positive comments from Winnipeggers, and negative comments from other Canadians.

“There’s a whole bunch of other Canadians who just wanted to tell me I made the biggest mistake of my life by moving here,” he said by phone from another travel experience, this time in Taiwan.
“The main point of the video, in some ways, is that a lot of people have some preconceived notions about Winnipeg — especially outsiders — and a lot of times what they discuss about Winnipeg can be negative…and that’s not my experience with the city.
“Every place in the world has positive and negative aspects – every city has its problems, as is the case in Winnipeg, but the conversation always seems to focus on the negative. There are a lot of parts of the city that are really great and amazing, and there is a lot that the people of the city can be proud of.” “
Watson, whose career has been in film editing, began documenting his travels more than a decade ago — a time when, he said, the idea of social media “influencers” was still in its infancy.
“I started photographing my travels as a side hobby, and I didn’t expect anyone to watch it.
“The thing that actually started my channel is that 11 years ago I took a trip around the world, just with a home video camera… but then I edited it as if it were a TV series. Since then, I’ve bought better equipment, but it’s still, production-wise , a one-man show in terms of photography and editing.
