A pickup truck driver fleeing police rushed through the doors of a JCPenney store in a crowded Texas mall, wounding five people before officers shot him dead, authorities said.
A 53-year-old man named John Darrell Schultz of Kempner was driving a truck and crashed into a department store in Killeen, about 70 miles (110 kilometers) north of the state capital, Austin, on Saturday afternoon and continued into the building, striking people as he went. According to Sgt. Brian Washko of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Emergency Medical Services transported four victims from the mall to area hospitals and another traveled to the hospital separately. He added that their ages ranged between 6 and 75 years, and their condition was not immediately known.
The chase began around 5 p.m. on Interstate 14 in Belton, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) from Killeen, after authorities received calls about an erratic driver in a black pickup truck, said Ophelia Miramontez of the Killeen Police Department.

“The suspect drove his vehicle through the doors and continued driving through the JCPenney store, striking several people,” Washko said. “The officer and the Killeen police officer continued on foot following this vehicle, which was driving through the store, actively running over people. “It traveled several hundred yards.”
Officers from the state Department of Public Safety, two agents and three other law enforcement agencies “participated in the shooting to eliminate this threat,” Washko said.
He added that one of the officers who exchanged gunfire with the suspect was working as a security guard at the mall, while others were off duty.
Eyewitnesses interviewed by local media outside the mall said they heard several gunshots and saw people fleeing through the mall.
